The Back Doctors Podcast

This episode’s “Back Doctor” is Dr. Lee Hazen.  Dr. Hazen shares a story of a 59 year old man with 30 years of back pain even after having back surgery.  But…there’s hope.

Dr. Hazen graduated Cum Laude from Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles in 1989.   After a short post-ceptorship in Burbank, Ca, he was invited to become a resident in Dr. James Cox’s clinic.  From 1989 until 1998 he was co-director and resident in Ft. Wayne Indiana with Dr. Cox.  While there, he attended and completed a 400 hour post-graduate Chiropractic Orthopedics training sponsored by National University of Health Sciences.  Dr. Hazen has been serving the Murrieta-Temecula area for 15 years. As a Cox Technique instructor for the past 18 years he has taught many chiropractors across the country the use of the specialized decompression table, diagnosis and care of spinal disease.  Currently he is on the post graduate faculty of National University of Health Sciences.

This episode’s Back Doctor is Dr. George Joachim.  Dr. Joachim shares a story of a dual sport high school athlete with a back injury.

Dr. Joachim attended Ohio State University and completed his Doctoral work at the National College in Chicago. He completed his hospital rotation at Edgewater Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Joachim is Board Certified in Rehabilitation. He is a past President of the Northeast Indiana Chiropractic Association. Dr Joachim has lectured nationally and internationally on the conservative treatments for low back and neck pain. He is part of the post graduate faculty at the National University of Health Science. His personal background involves a strong athletic career as a collegiate “Big 10” competitor, to more recently, a Bronze medal winning United States National Bobsled athlete.

On this episode, Dr. Larry Widmer shares two different patient stories with severe neck pain.  He explains what their problems were and how each was resolved without surgery.

Dr Widmer is a 1977 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa.  He completed his Diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics from National College of Chiropractic in Chicago and is  Certified in the Cox® Technic .  Dr. Widmer is presently a student in the Masters of Science program at the University of Edinburgh school of Medicine and Veterinary Science.  He practiced for 36 years in Lancaster, Pennsylvania before relocating to his present practice with the Connerly Physical Medicine Group in Santa Fe, New Mexico specializing in the conservative, non-surgical treatment of cervical and lumbar disc syndromes and the conservative management of headache.

On this episode, Dr. Mike Poulin discusses a variety of cervical spine cases, from the common complaint of headache to an extreme case of post surgical continued pain syndrome from a multi-level neck surgery.

Osteoarthritis of the knee is commonly treated with drugs.  Long-term therapy with medicines may cause other problems: NSAIDs can cause stomach ulcers, cardiovascular problems, and kidney and liver damage. Taking larger doses of acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) may cause liver damage.

On this episode, Dr. Luigi Albano offers a totally new drug-free treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee.  He applies the principles he uses in treating the spine to treat the knee.

Dr. Albano graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri, in May 2000 and is a member of the Canadian Chiropractic Association and Ontario Chiropractic Association. He is a graduate of Assumption College High School and received his Bachelors of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Windsor. He is an instructor of Anatomy and Physiology as well as Neurology at Everest College in the registered massage therapy program.

Dr. Albano is an avid football fan and works with the Holy Name Fighting Knights senior high school football team. He volunteers his time as an assistant coach in the Windsor Essex Football League. He serves on the board of South Windsor Youth Soccer Club and coaches his children’s teams.

Low back pain is a common complaint during pregnancy.  Dr. Amelia Pappas, a mother of two has a special interest in obstetrical back pain.  In this episode, Dr. Pappas shares with us her success using a unique treatment for a women in her third trimester of pregnancy with back and pelvic pain.  Dr. Pappas practices at the Melbourne Spine Clinic and also in Malvern, Australia.

Dr. Pappas began practice at the end of 2009.  Her areas of special interest include obstetrical back pain, paediatric care and disc lesion reduction/decompression using flexion-distraction therapy.

In March 2010, she commenced Cox® Technic flexion-distraction certification and became fully certified in November 2012.  Dr. Pappas has a special interest in educating patients to manage and relieve neck and back pain and runs stretch class and back classes.

Dr. Pappas is currently on maternity leave with her second baby.  Becoming a mother of 2 has enhanced her interest in pre and post-natal spinal pain and motivated further research into the application of Cox® Technic flexion- distraction therapy to treat these conditions.

On this episode, Dr. Jim Brandt will be sharing with us two very interesting patient stories.  Dr. Jim Brandt began practice in October 1969 with two other doctors.  He began his private practice in 1970.  He obtained his Diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics in 1980.  He has served on the Chiropractic Orthopedic Examination Board from 1987 to present.  Currently, he is the President of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists. He received his Masters degree in Biomechanical Trauma from Lynn University in 1994.  His son Ryan joined the practice 2000.  Dr. Brandt has lectured locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.  He was presented with the Examiner Emeritus award that has been given to only three other chiropractic orthopedists since the Boards inception in the 1960’s.  He has studied with Dr. James M. Cox since the 1970’s and he and Dr. Ryan Brandt are certified Cox® Technic flexion-distraction practitioners.  Dr. Brandt has been married since 1968 and has two grown children and five grandchildren.
